Disaster Relief
Coastal communities along the Bay of Bengal are frequently displaced by cyclones, floods and other disasters. MSMF supports the Spandana Disaster Relief Centre, which provides displaced persons with basic necessities such as food, drinking water and medications.
Introduction
The Spandana Relief Centre was established in 1990, born from an urgent need to provide a swift safety net for the vulnerable coastal communities of the Bay of Bengal. This coastline is one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world. The families that live in these low-lying areas face a relentless cycle of cyclones, storm surges, and seasonal floods.
When the sirens sound, thousands are forced to evacuate their homes on a moment’s notice, often escaping with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They arrive at higher ground lacking the most basic human necessities: shelter, clean water, and food. Even when the waters recede, the tragedy continues; families often return to find their meager possessions washed away, leaving them with no way to cook, clothe themselves, or restart their daily lives.
The Spandana Relief Centre serves as a permanent vanguard against these predictable disasters. Its mission is split into two critical phases of intervention:
- Emergency Response: Our team of dedicated volunteers provides immediate “survival kits” to evacuated families. This includes life-saving access to drinking water, emergency rations, essential medicines, and dry clothing during the peak of the crisis.
- The Road Home: We don’t stop when the rain ends. To help families regain their dignity and autonomy, we provide “re-entry packs” containing clothing, kitchen utensils, groceries, and bedding. These essentials allow families to move back into their dwellings and resume their normal routines weeks faster than they could on their own.
Beyond the coast, the Spandana program remains agile—extending this same spirit of rapid response to victims of fires, earthquakes, and public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spandana Relief Centre has stood as a constant sanctuary for over three decades, evolving from a local response team into a sophisticated lifeline that has navigated the region through decades of systemic climate challenges and natural disasters.
These activities are supported with funds and volunteers from the Sankurathri Foundation.
